So, “What has Garlic Mayo got to do with anything photography?” I hear you say, luckily for Tom Knowles, everything!
Tom is one of our members who is a keen architectural photographer. He enjoys going on city breaks where he can focus on mini photography projects. These trips have allowed Tom to capture some striking architecture, in a clean, minimal and graphic style. His recent trips to Liege, Bilbao and Valencia have led to a number of international awards for his work. These include a number of gold medals and honourable mentions.
The Garlic Mayo Moment
One of his most recent trips was to Liege, Belgium. Tom wanted to capture the smooth flowing lines and vast vaulted ceilings of the Liège-Guillemins railway station, designed by Santiago Calatrava. He had set himself three days to capture as much of the station as he could. Above all, his main aim was to use these to enter another international competition.
The Farmani Group is a leading organization which promotes photography, design and architecture across the globe since 1985. Over 2018 Tom has entered a number of their competitions, which has achieved him international success and also awards. Furthermore, the latest of these awards was announced just this month. To his delight, he was awarded a Bronze Award for his shot of Liege Railway Station, titled “Garlic Mayo”.
So why call it “Garlic Mayo”? Well, Tom is known for his, let’s say, creative titles and this one is no different. While on this trip he decided that every shot he took should be named after what he had just eaten. You can guess what some of the contents were in his sandwich he was eating at that time!
