This week we had a fascinating talk on Restoring Photos by Diane Berridge.  Diane runs her own successful business (Digital Magic Memories) where she digitally removes imperfections on old photographs which have suffered damage over time. To demonstrate to us the scale and breadth of her work Diane had a large number of examples on display. This truly demonstrated to us what can be achieved and how you can transform even the most damaged photos.

Digitally Repairing

Not only did Diane talk about her work, but she also shared with us the techniques used to restore photos.  She explained to us, as families keep and hand down photos from days gone by unfortunately damage can happen. Some of the common problems over time are creases, cuts, tears, fading or colour casts on old photos. Diane demonstrated to us how she repaired these digitally using a number of techniques within Photoshop, to provide amazing results. Slide the slider on the picture to see what a difference she was able to make.

Inspired By The Talk

This talk and demonstration were very inspiring and certainly generated a lot of discussion among Club members in the evening.  Jeff Wright, one of our members, has a number of old photos of his family which unfortunately have been damaged over time. Based on the techniques he learnt from the talk he thought he would have a go at restoring one.  As you can see he has made a significant difference to his ancestor’s photograph based on Diane’s demonstration.

Colourizing To Bring Life To A Photo

One other area Diane specialises in is a technique called Colourizing.  This is where she adds colour to a black and white photo to bring it to life, with astounding results.  Yet again Diane was very generous in demonstrating to us this technique and how to achieve the best outcome.  She explained that the hardest part of this process is skin toning and can take the most time to perfect.  This example shows the difference that can be achieved!
