While other photographers interpret a brief, in Forensic Photography you have to produce accurate, detailed photographs that faithfully record the location and evidence of a crime or accident scene. And most importantly, as clearly and as objectively as possible. At the Club this week we had a talk by Linda Cox and Roz Middleton about this fascinating subject.
The Hall was packed as we all sat down and listened in awe to Linda and Roz outlining the detailed area of this area of photography. There were a number of examples shown throughout the talk, as well as hearing some of the real-life stories about bones recovered from Dunkirk, to the complexity of postmortem photography. Linda and Roz’s talk was far-ranging, covering many areas and showing how thorough and in-depth their work is. Furthermore, this demonstrated what a fantastic job the police do in recording and gathering evidence to solve a crime.
In the second half, there was an opportunity for us all to turn detective, searching out and recording fingerprints and footmarks throughout the hall. There was also on display, a fingerprint dusting kit and other tools of the trade, which are used to collect evidence.
What was covered?
The following areas were discussed in depth.
- Standard scene photography – long, mid and close range
- Fingerprint and footwear photography
- 360-degree photography – sphericals and for CCTV purposes
- Injury photos- including bite marks
- UV photographs – SmartWater, bruises

Linda and Roz’s introduction into Forensic Photography was really well-presented with plenty of time for hands-on photography afterwards. An excellent evening where several members commented on the quality of the talk. A special thanks to Linda and Roz for spending the time in preparing and delivering a truly interactive talk on a fascinating subject!
