Taking Images and Making Images - Buffalo Road by Steve Brabner

Buffalo Road by Steve Brabner

‘Taking Images and Making Images’ was the title of the talk by Steve Brabner this week. Steve has been experimenting with photography processing techniques for over 30 years from the days of film to the digital age. With film, he experimented with many techniques including Litho printing and composites, before moving to digital.

A Move to America

Steve moved to America for four years, due to work. It was at this point that Adobe launched Photoshop. Straight away he immersed himself into learning and using the great potential that this software package offered. Editing, compositing and filters allowed him to change bland images that had a good basic composition into competition winning images. The more he experimented the more he learned. From this experimentation, he was able to achieve, many

PAGB awards for his work. An example of this is Buffalo Road (above) where he achieved a Gold Medal.

Creativity, Although is it Photography?

Steve explained the different packages that he uses and the effects that were possible from these. This allowed Steve to be more creative using post-processing techniques on improving composition, lighting and emotion within the photograph. Transforming and combining these from images that were neglected for many years into competition winning images.

In the end, his talk made you realise that there are different ways to achieve a creative photograph. As long as you have the basic skills and creativity you can construct a strong image outside of the camera. Although, is this real photography…..?
